How do Digital nomads make money?

How do Digital nomads make money?

What is it that Digital Nomads do to earn money?

Some time ago, traveling around the world while working online and earning money only seemed like a dream. In today’s world, that dream isn’t so unlikely anymore. In fact, remote work opportunities increased over the years, and becoming a digital nomad is easier than you think.

This is why the question of how do I become a digital nomad is at the top of many people’s lists. If the idea of becoming a digital nomad and changing your lifestyle keeps roaming your mind, we are here to answer your questions.

Becoming a Digital nomad

How to become a digital nomad is probably one of the most common questions asked. Often people assume it’s only about making quick money online and traveling. We can guarantee you that the digital nomad lifestyle is so much more than that. For starters, we like to call it a global lifestyle lived by people from all walks of life.

Within this lifestyle, two things are a given; you typically earn money via remote work or online. Secondly, you enjoy living outside your own home country and are into exploring different ways on how to shape your own life. Instead of following a set of rules, it’s about exploring how you want to live your life according to your desires – not only in the near future but also in the long term.

Ask yourself some important questions:

  • What are your desires?
  • What areas of my current life aren’t making me happy?
  • What people in my environment are holding me back?
  • What beliefs do I disagree with?
  • Can I do my job online?
  • If not, how can I make money online?
  • What are my skills?

Three types of Digital Nomads

Although all jobs of Digital nomads are done online, these jobs can diversify a lot. So let’s divide it into the three existing types that a Digital Nomad can be:

  • The entrepreneurs with their own online business
  • The remote workers
  • The location-independent freelancers

Think outside the box! We see in the digital nomad community that talents are used across several projects. Many nomads combine for example having a remote job and turning in a side hustle into a successful business.

The Entrepreneur

A Digital Nomad Entrepreneur can be described as someone who has created their own (digital) business. You provide diverse types of products and services to companies or clients employing digital communication tools. The process of becoming financially free with your own business at first can be challenging. It takes a lot of hard work and you might end up working more hours than on a regular job. To experience less financial stress lot of entrepreneurs find other ways to earn some extra income to be able to support themselves until they reach their goals.

Some examples of entrepreneurs can be: Marketing Agency, Selling information and knowledge like courses, E-Commerce Owner

Remote Workers

As home offices become more common in 2020 and 2021, so does remote work. A Remote Worker is someone that is hired by a company but can either work from home or can choose their own workplace. This place can be a co-working space, a coffee shop, or just at home. However, you probably still have online meetings and a fixed amount of hours a week to cover. You can indeed be the Nomads with the least flexible schedule, but at the same time, you are provided with a steady and fixed salary in most cases.

Freelancer

A freelancer is referred to as the nomads that work online for one, or multiple clients. As a nomad freelancer, you conduct work for other businesses but since you’re not employed it comes with a lot of freedom. Typically, you can work from any part of the world, as long as you meet your deadlines and have a steady WiFi connection.

The salary of freelancers varies. This is why it can be very unpredictable and a strong reason not to choose this path.

While it brings a lot of freedom, it can be super stressful at times as well. Finding clients and making sure that you have your preferred income each month isn’t always easy to maintain. This can be a huge downside and the reason why many freelancers choose a remote job or focus on finding long-term clients instead.

Freelancer jobs are mostly in fields like social media, creative content, or web design. Some examples: content writer, graphic designer, web designer, copywriter, etc.

What type of Digital Nomad do you want to be?

Believe it or not, the global pandemic has increased remote job opportunities. Many companies have realized, that working from home can be an awesome alternative, and as efficient as working from the office. Therefore numerous positions that were office jobs have transformed into the remote. Also, as businesses downsize and hire remote workers, companies can reduce costs like office spaces. The possibility to earn a living, while traveling and visiting new places is more plausible than you think!

But, before you quit your job and become the next Digital Nomad, let’s figure out which jobs you can do according to your skills to earn money. Download our free guide below to find out more.

Personal Branding tips with nomad Virginia Salas Kastilio

Personal Branding tips with nomad Virginia Salas Kastilio

Meet Virginia Salas Kastilio, founder of Gini.TV and the “I Trust You Movement”, a “third culture kid” and personal branding expert. Virginia has been grown up in a family of entrepreneurs. Hence, after working for five years at tech giant Apple Inc and Oracle she came to the realization that corporate wasn’t her calling in life. By dealing with high level clients and managing multi-million dollar deals, she proved her worth at a young age and was ready to pursue her passion for filmmaking and content storytelling herself. The entrepreneurial focus of her upbringing had a lasting impact and made switching from corporate to the creative world of YouTube pretty easy. She has been on YouTube for 13 years now and is, as she quotes herself ‘in full-time occupation to saving the earth.’

At the Digital Nomad Bootcamp at Camp308 in Canggu, she provided some valuable guidance when it comes to personal branding. Here is what we learned.

Why do I need a personal branding?

Whether you know it or not, you already in some way have a personal brand. It’s not just your logo or your (potential) website. It’s not just about what your organization does or sells but who you are and what you stand for.

Defining your brand and truly understanding your audience should therefore be the foundation for your business and marketing strategy. Not only differentiate effective personal branding you from your competition and allow you to build trust with your audience and potential clients, but it also allows you to build your own imperium without a lot of cash at hand. You will never get a second chance to make a first impression, so making one that sets you apart and reflects who you are is crucial.

According to Virginia, there is a lot of value that can be extracted from your personal brand when switching from being behind the publication to standing in the front as a real human being. “Not everyone will be comfortable with being the face of the brand, but if you want to do it cheaper and not spend too much money on ads – you will get a lot of benefits from it.” she says. It’s a very practical route to go. However, if you want to save money while accelerating your business it will be worth the effort. Obviously, you can have other people do that for you but it will both be more financial costing and you won’t have the same control over your own brand.

Declare your “why”

If personal branding hasn’t been your focus, the first thing you can do is to define what your passion is and where you can bring value. Whatever that is, you need to declare it in your space and field so people know that you are the expert for that specific topic. According to Virginia, as soon as you become more accessible and visible to the world, people will get excited to learn from your skills and expertise.

Example: Make a video that declares your “why”. What has been the “shit” that you had to overcome in order to be where you are right now? One of Virginia’s biggest lessons is, that as an entrepreneur you make a lot of mistakes and lose a lot of money in order to learn the things that you need to know. You might trust the wrong people or invest in the wrong project, but it sharpens your skills and you will never make the same mistake again. Each one of us might have a different niche or specialization, but through sharing our stories, fuck-ups, and what made you, we can learn and share.

“The more authentically you share your learnings, people are going to be interested in doing business with you, because they are going to feel like they really know you and it’s all about melting that relationship of trust.”

💡Advice: Subtitle the video to make it easier to watch on all devices

Create and share your story unapologetic

Sharing your story can for some feel daunting. However, when it comes to social media, Virginia encourages you to see it as self-expression, not self-promotion. It might be an ego thing where you feel like “I don’t want to seem like a show-off, that pushes my agenda on everyone else”, but according to her, that is exactly what you are supposed to do. It’s about cultivating a relationship and creating a storyline of why you and your brand are important.

By not sharing your message, skillset, and your capabilities, you are giving away a customer to someone else who might not even deserve it. The universe has its funny ways to give us anything we are asking for. So if we don’t dare to ask for it and hide behind our talent how is anything good going to find our way?

Growth hack the f*** out of social media platforms

Declaring our zone of genius and our “why” sounds all good, but how do we get more people to see those videos? This is where it gets tricky. Many brands were absolutely rocked by the 2018 Facebook algorithm update that resulted in a nosedive of organic reach. But according to Virginia, there are still ways to survive (and outsmart) the Instagram algorithm. Even though the outreach is more limited than before, she still posts on Facebook and IG as it still converts a small audience and brings more people into her tribe.

Email marketing does also works. “It’s not a coincidence that people are making 8 figures from emails! It’s really about creating that storyline and posting as if your writing articles and not trying to sell sell sell”, she says. What she recommends is to focus more on LinkedIn and Youtube. Video is one of the most popular content formats for Social Media and Youtube is just like a huge content library. Google and other search engines tend to favor video, so sharing your video via YouTube with good titles, descriptions, and tags is a great way to improve your search engine ranking.

Key Take Aways For Entrepreneurs

✅ Share your story unapologetically

✅ When sharing videos focus on social media platforms like LinkedIn and Youtube

✅ The more authentically you share your learnings, people are going to be interested in doing business with you

✅ As an entrepreneur, you have to make a lot of mistakes in order to learn

Meet Globetrotter Dean. A talk about his Digital Nomad Lifestyle

Meet Globetrotter Dean. A talk about his Digital Nomad Lifestyle

The journey of Dean Kuchel and how he became location independant

The second episode of DND Goes Behind The Scenes is up! We interviewed a true globetrotter and digital nomad Dean to talk about the location’s independent lifestyle. Unlike many other nomads, Dean never planned to become a digital nomad. However, once he experienced the location independent lifestyle, there was no turning back. He convinced his boss to keep on working remotely and has been on the road since 2013. Dean is working remotely as a consultant for tech companies. His job is to help businesses with their customer success management and how to build relationships with clients. He shared his experiences on his website www.whereisdean.com and through his community Digital Nomads Israel. He traveled to over 90 countries and his goal is to travel to all the 196 countries in the world..

”Dont fake kindness but don’t be an asshole”

What person changes your life and led you to the location independent lifestyle?

His curiosity to travel the world and meet people from other countries was triggered by his mom who is a travel agent. The work and travel lifestyle though was something that just came on his path. While he was working in the USA and waiting for his visa, he started to work remote. Once he got the taste of it he didn’t want to come back to the office. And his is how his working remote lifestyle continues until today.

Dean spends the week in Bali and was mostly in digital nomad capital Canggu working from Dojo Coworking Space. First of all, it was a great week because he met a lot of new digital nomads. On top of that, he also hung out with people from his own community Digital Nomads Isreal. So it was a great mix of old friends and new friends. This is really one of the coolest things about the location independent lifestyle, there are so many people to meet!

What is challenging about living the location independent lifestyle?

‘‘My day to day job is not a challenge.” Dean is busy as a beaver. He is working on a lot of different things at once and meets a lot of people. However, his day job is not challenging. He shared four challenges:

Community – His community has 6000 members and his main challenge is to assist everyone. That takes a lot of time and energy while he is building his community and networking.

Family
Another day-to-day challenge is being away from his family. Especially not seeing his nephews growing up is really hard.

Relationships – A common topic in the digital nomad community is the hurdles when talking about dating. We spoke about this with Digital Nomad Wade in the second episode of Digital Nomads Daily Goes Behind The Scenes. Dean is traveling a lot and moves fast so it’s challenging to find a partner.

Friendships – The location independent lifestyle allows you to meet a lot of people from all walks of life. It’s the ‘hi’s’ that make him excited about traveling so much. While the ‘goodbyes’ are is the hardest part. His only advice to himself and others is: ‘enjoy the moment, accept it and do quick goodbyes.’

What is your greatest failure in your location independent lifestyle so far?

The first thing Dean shares is that he doesn’t believe in something such as failure. Also, by just trying you are already succeeding he explains. A good lesson from the road is though to be nice and kind to all the people you meet. In his view, friends come and go, enemies accumulated over time. In other words, you might not be friends with everyone but you don’t want to have enemies either.

The second piece of advice from Dean is to say yes to everything and go explore. This mindset makes him happy and feel successful in his own way. Furthermore, he would prefer meeting people rather than staying at home by himself. Saying ”yes” is what brought me to a lot of experiences on this planet. Hence, nothing bad ever happened to me from saying yes. And nothing good happened to me from saying no, he adds.

What advice do you give yourself and others about how to live the digital nomad lifestyle?

As a professional globetrotter and digital nomad, Dean has 2 bits of advice for you in store:

Digital Nomad Tip #01 – Pack less

The concept is pretty simple – The less you own the more freedom you have. As a minimal and true digital nomad, Dean travels with a single carry-on and a backpack for his laptop only. This allows him to move around fast and easily and live the location independent lifestyle successfully.

Digital Nomad Tip # 02 – Say yes and go explore

The second piece of advice from Dean is to say yes to everything and go explore. This mindset makes him happy and feel successful in his own way. Furthermore, he would prefer meeting people rather than staying at home by himself. Saying ”yes” is what brought me to a lot of experiences on this planet. Hence, nothing bad ever happened to me from saying yes. And nothing good happened to me from saying no, he adds.

”Free is the idea to go wherever you want and whenever you want. Object and things just keep you on the ground.”

What book or podcast do you recommend?

Many who live the location independent lifestyle have read the 4-hour workweek by Tim Ferris. However, Dean recommends reading ”The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson” The reason why he recommends this book is because it’s a great concept for people to push their dreams and ideas. On top of that, this book is a good read for people who are living or aspiring to the location Independent lifestyle. One of his favorite podcasts to disconnect is 99percentinvisible. These are random stories from all around the world hosted by Roman Mars.

Key Take Aways For Nomads

✅ Be realistic about your expectations of this lifestyle

✅ Always say yes to challenges and go explore

✅ The less you own the more freedom you have

5 Digital Nomads Lifestyle Tips with YouTuber Jordan Simons

5 Digital Nomads Lifestyle Tips with YouTuber Jordan Simons

A talk with Jordan Simons on how to sustain the digital nomad lifestyle

For some, the nomadic lifestyle is just like a short love affair. Magical, exciting and very intense. However,  just as magical it appears just as difficult is it too sustain for a long period of time. So what can we do and what should we be aware of when we want to sustain a nomadic lifestyle and turn our love affair to a long term thing?

Meet Jord, backpacker turned successful digital nomad and content creator. He has been embracing the nomadic lifestyle for almost five years, earning a full-time income from YouTube AdSense and video/photo content. After exploring over 70 countries, he now spends most of his time in one of our favorite digital nomad locations, Bali.

The nomadic lifestyle comes without instructions. But as an established digital nomad who truly understands the struggles and challenges, he is the perfect candidate to ask for some tips and tricks.

5 tips on how to sustain your digital nomad lifestyle

DIGITAL NOMAD TIP #01 – FIND DIFFERENT REVENUE STREAMS

In order to stay in the game, you need a stable and full income to keep you rolling. When it comes to photo and video creation, it took Jord a few years to figure out how to make money around it. His first dollar as a digital nomad came from YouTube AdSense. However, if you want to earn a full-time income as a digital nomad you have to explore more ways to make money. Now, besides YouTube AdSense, one of his main revenues comes from Stock footage and licenses his photos.

Like many other digital nomads, Jord was trying to make ends meet month to month, mostly relying on YouTube for a long period of time. Yet, he emphasizes the importance of having a long term perspective when entering this career.

“To sustain the nomadic lifestyle you need to have a long term view in mind and always explore new opportunities and platforms when building your revenue stream,” he says.

This long term approach, doesn’t only apply to content creators but most digital nomads. You can also check out our digital nomad talk with Kait Rich, who combines online coaching programs with in person retreats to create a full income.

DIGITAL NOMAD TIP #02 – MAP OUT YOUR PERSONAL WORK/LIFE BALANCE

To map out your personal work/life balance will help put your body and mind at ease. For Jord, this meant to settle in Bali instead of travelling around and work on the go. He still goes on trips to create content, but comes “home” to do the editing etc. A choice which provides stability and the opportunity for a work/life balance that enables him to keep creating.

We would never underestimate the importance of hard work. Yet, we also believe that you should enjoy the places you go to. To be fair, what is the point in spending 100 hours a week in front of the laptop, if it keeps you from doing what you set out to do in the first place. Which in most cases, is to see and experience the world.

Therefore, you have to map out a personal system that works for you. Nowadays content creation and vlogging is a very popular digital nomad job. However, Jord has seen some of the biggest Youtubers get burned out due to pure exhaustion. Just focusing on work, will most likely prevent you from creating and suppress your motivation in the long run.

DIGITAL NOMAD TIP #03 – PAY ATTENTION TO THE LAST DETAIL

As said earlier, there is nothing wrong with being a hard worker. In fact, you should be. However, if you don’t pay attention to the last details it may not pay off as you want it to. According to Jord, content creation goes far beyond producing videos and editing. Many make the mistake of finishing one video after another just to move on to the next straight away. But in order to get the most out of your hard work, paying attention to the last detail is key. In regards to content creation, the last detail is putting some time in marketing your content. In the end, getting those last bits right can make all the difference!

DIGITAL NOMAD TIP #04 – NEVER SACRIFICE THE QUALITY OF YOUR WORK OVER QUANTITY

We don’t believe in failures. However, Jord has made some mistakes we all can learn from. One is to take on too many projects and sacrificing the quality of the outcome. “Consistency is key, but if your trying to divide your attention to too many projects, none of them will end up any good,” he says. As a digital nomad your time is very precious. Therefore, in the process of choosing which projects to take on, remember to stay true to yourself.

According to Jord, it’s better to dive into a fewer amount that really spark your interest rather than fumbling around with 10 different projects. You should prioritize projects that provide value both personally and professionally in the long run.

DIGITAL NOMAD TIP #05 – HAVE PATIENCE, SUCCESS DOESN’T COME OVERNIGHT

Turning into a successful long term digital nomad is a long and tough journey. The struggles are real no matter if you are a vlogger, coach, content creator or something completely different. Success mostly doesn’t come overnight and if it does, it might not last long. According to Jord, a lot of people become video and photo creators without having the actual understanding or backbone of monetization. Building an understanding takes time and effort, but hang in there. As long as you stay consistent with your work, see improvement over time, even just small ones, you are on the right track!

Key Take Aways For Nomads

✅ Have patience – success doesn’t come overnight

✅ Have a long-term perspective when entering the nomadic lifestyle

✅ Find a work/life balance that enables you to keep creating

✅ Build a stable income from multiple revenue streams

A Digital Nomad Talk with online teacher Wade Sellers

A Digital Nomad Talk with online teacher Wade Sellers

Wade Sellers about his digital nomad journey

In the first episode of DND Goes Behind The Scenes, we are interviewing digital nomad Wade Sellers. He left the states only 5 months ago to start his digital nomad lifestyle journey in Bali. Working remote isn’t a new concept for Wade because he has been cafe hopping back in Florida. He asked his boss ‘How remote is remote?’ and created his own opportunity by working remotely from Bali. He is enjoying the digital nomad lifestyle a lot but we asked Wade to chat about the #notsosexystuff.

What person changed your life and inspired you to live the digital nomad lifestyle?

Wade learned about the digital nomad lifestyle where you can work and travel via YouTubers Christian creator of YouTube Channel LostLeBlanc and digital nomad Chris the Freelancer.

Aside from his remote job, Wade is also working on his passion projects. He created video content on Instagram and has been playing around with funny video edits. Soon, his IGTV channel Apple Picking will be launched so we will see more of Nomad Wade!

What is main struggle during the week?

Figuring out your routines is super important. This especially goes for when you are working on multiple things at the same time. Back home in Florida Wade had a pretty solid routine. He finds it hard though to find balance in the digital nomad lifestyle because there is simply so much cool stuff. Finding balance and creating good routines is an on-going process but after 5 months he finally gets the hang of it.

Wade likes to start the day with structure and starts his morning routine always the night before. Three main elements of his morning routine are:

🙏🏻 Gratitude practice

📝 Accomplishment journal

✔️ Use a task organizer

How does a typical day looks like?

Wake up between 6:30 am – 7:30 am
Client Work from 8 am – 12 nn
Workout for one our
Me-time for my own projects
Dinner time 😍

After dinner Wade goes for another work session, do a yoga practice or just does fun stuff. He adds that it’s important to have a routine. On top of that, if you start your day early you have simply more time!
