12: The Secret Of Finding A Remote Job With The Remote Job Coach.

Digital Nomad Jordan Carroll, also known as the Remote Job Coach, is back on the podcast! In this episode, he shares how anyone can land a remote job that fits their digital nomad lifestyle. Over the years, he has successfully coached people through 1:1 coaching sessions, group sessions and online courses. This episode is valuable for anyone seeking a job or looking for a change. Get ready for life-changing lessons with Jordan and kickstart your digital nomad lifestyle with a remote job at a company you love!

How did Jordan become the Remote Job Coach?

Jordan has been working remotely for companies of all sizes since 2013. Through these experiences, he was able to see insights into what it’s like to work remotely in different types of businesses. During his travels, he met many people and was asked the same question repeatedly, β€œhow do I land a remote job?”

He took the opportunity and started building his business, and he is now known as β€œThe Remote Coach.” He describes his role as very similar to someone who is a career coach. The big difference is that Jordan helps people land remote jobs. Jordan’s approach is more than just finding any remote position. As a remote job coach, his goal is to find a job that matches your desires and what you seek in creating a new lifestyle.

What is the difference between mentorship and a remote job coach?

Before becoming a coach, Jordan had been a mentor to a lot of his colleagues. So in his experience and the way he uses it in his vocabulary, mentorship is typically free.

Jordan describes mentorship as a free exchange based on his personal experience. He also shares that he sees mentorship as voluntarily helping someone with a lower commitment. On the other hand, coaching requires an investment and naturally evolves into a more significant commitment because there is a financial piece.

Jordan states that you don’t need to be an expert to become a remote job coach, but you simply need to be a few steps ahead of the person you are helping. There are many coaches around these days and to make sure you find the right coach, you’ll need to do some thorough research. For instance, look up reviews and testimonials of past clients.

How Jordan helps people to find remote jobs?

Jordan’s business as The Remote Job coach has evolved over the years. Today you can find a lot of free content about finding remote jobs on his website theremotejobcoach.com. You can also sign up for his courses or one of his group coaching programs. Rarely does he works with people one-on-one, although he prefers group coaching because people can learn from each other.

What we love about Jordan is that a lot of his content is free and there are many levels of working with him. His team also regularly posts remote job openings on his job board. Before the jobs are published, he and his team verify the job is entirely remote. Jordan thinks of himself as a facilitator and that results only come from the actions of his candidates. Simply because he cannot guarantee the results, but you will get the lifestyle you want if you are motivated and have a good mindset.

3 tips for finding a remote job from the remote job coach

Ask yourself what you are looking for in a company or job.
Finding the right job is so much more than just making good cash. You will have to ask yourself what is essential and how this job can fit into your digital nomad lifestyle. Working remotely is great but only if you can experience the freedom and lifestyle you desire.

Evaluate your own skillset

An important step is to look at your skills and find jobs matching those skills. If you have little work experience, you may want to consider doing an internship. Before starting an internship, you need to know what you want to learn to make sure this work experience is helping you move forward.

Be proactive rather than reactive when finding your dream job

Job seekers who don’t look beyond job boards tend to be reactive job seekers, meaning they respond to what is available at that moment. Or you will apply for jobs and wait for someone to reach out. Instead, Jordan encourages you to search with a proactive mindset. This makes the overall process more effective as you will target companies offering remote positions matching your needs.

Qualify and target companies that offer remote work

Jordan talks about actively targeting companies and the first step is to find qualified companies. For example, if you want to work in a specific industry, you could do a google search β€œindustry name + remote companies.” The next step is to see if they talk about remote work and if the answer is yes, you want to save them. The easiest way is to bookmark them or create an online doc and perhaps add more company details. Check out if they have a job board, follow their social media, and stay up to date if a position opens up. By following and interacting with the company’s content, you target them.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to knowing what you can bring to the table and targeting remote companies that are looking for those skills. Listen to the episode for more tips about how to land a remote job.

11: Overcoming the first obstacles in the digital nomad lifestyle with MS with Lina

Balancing work, life, and relationships can already be tough. But for Lina Miclea, she is a digital nomad who has to worry about the health practicalities of her multiple sclerosis. Even though she started her planning her nomad lifestyle in 2020, Lina only began nomadding in January 2022. In this episode, Lina discusses her journey, how she manages her life, the unanticipated struggles she faces, and advice she has for new digital nomads like herself.

Meet Digital Nomad Lina and learn how her remote lifestyle journey started

Lina’s nomadding journey began because of COVID-19 pandemic. As she mentioned, if you stay in one place constantly, it can drive you crazy. Hence, she took the time to explore the world and take her work elsewhere. Unfortunately, during her planning process, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). She thought it wasn’t fate to travel and work remotely anymore. Lina had to stay put in Toronto to maintain her infusions, MRIs, doctor appointments, and health insurance. One day, the opposite happened – Lina figured out a way to embark on her digital nomad adventures. In this article we cover:
  • How does Lina sustain herself?
  • Balancing work, life, relationships, and health practicalities.
  • Unexpected struggles of the digital nomad lifestyle Tips for digital nomads

Combing passive income with following your passion

We all have one common question: how does she financially support herself? Lina shares that a chunk of her money comes from the investment property she purchased 7 years ago. She committed to paying the mortgage completely and having tenants move in and her husband is also actively working in the tech space of marketing. This gives her financial freedom and she is now following her passion for creating content and building an online community. Essentially, she relies on something concrete like her property to sustain herself, while doing something that she enjoys as an additional hustle.

Balancing work, life, relationships, and health practicalities

A typical day in Lina’s week consists of a combination of things. She can either work the entire day on building content and writing posts, managing her investment property, or both. But one thing is for sure – she loves to plan her schedule weeks in advance. She’s been married to her husband for 2 years. Since her husband is pretty busy himself she has lots of free time. Lina heavily prioritizes and values their time together but she loves her me-time as well. By going to the beach and workout daily she ensures to set aside a few hours a day for work and brainstorming content. Her investment property is one way of achieving passive income and Lina shares to always come up with inventive ideas for investing to have her passive income excel. She and her husband strive for a life where they can be freer and do the things they wish for like many other digital nomads. Learn more about achieving passive income with digital nomad Dean on our podcast. In order to keep her health insurance, she has to be a part of the social system in her home country. Becoming a digital nomad full-time though is not an option but she is always researching dig into the types of local and global assistance programs that exist.

Unexpected struggles of the digital nomad lifestyle

Lina likes to always plan, but she realizes that the digital nomad lifestyle can be very spontaneous; a plan is not always possible. One time, her husband and she planned to go on a shuttle through town in San Jose. However, they were late and missed it completely. When they went themselves and arrived in town, the circumstances became worse. It was pouring rain, and it was very dark as there were no street lights. They also did not stay in the most ideal accommodation as the area was rough and the internet was poor. As first-time nomadders, they were lost and did not know what to do. Lina talks these struggles as the hiccups of her digital nomad lifestyle and reflected how more research is essential. Nevertheless, they stuck through it all and did not move out until recently. She described the experience as character building as it taught her a lot about the nomad. More tips on how to plan your digital nomad lifestyle are shared in Anastasia and Tomer’s episode. They also planned their nomad life in advance and enjoy passive income while building their online business. Initially, they jumped right away into staying at a new place for a month because they wanted to feel at home – not like they were traveling somewhere. Going forward, Lina is eager to test the waters first by staying at a place for just a few days.

Lina’s tips for new digital nomads

  • Pack light: When you’re always on the move, overpacking will drag you down. You can also get rid of things on the way. If you’re going to a city, you can get your essentials there (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc).
  • Research your nomad destination well: Take the time to read other bloggers’ experiences and reviews. Some accounts are not always credible. They are your trusted sources.
  • Sell worn-out and unnecessary stuff: This is a good strategy to make extra pocket changes for your trips.
  • Look into coworking spaces: If you are not confident about the Internet at your new home, search for backups. The Internet is very important, especially for digital nomads – it will be your new best friend!

How Chels became a digital nomad

At 18, Chelsea began her nomad journey when she graduated high school and decided to drive across the country in the summer. Since then, her love for traveling has continued to grow as she lives in a part-time van to explore every corner of the world. Building an online business in web-design and social media

She has been running her travel and photography business part-time from her van and part-time from her house for three years now. This allows her to feel the security of having a home established somewhere. But at the same time, when she feels bored or in need of adventure, she hops on the van, and off she goes for a few weeks. As she calls it, β€œthe best of both worlds.”

How To Achieve Financial Freedom With Digital Nomad Dean

How To Achieve Financial Freedom With Digital Nomad Dean

Digital Nomads Daily Podcast Cover photo episode How To Achieve Financial Freedom With Digital Nomad Dean

09: How To Achieve Financial Freedom With Digital Nomad Dean

When you’re constantly traveling and working remotely, achieving financial liberty can be tough. Though, every person has different definitions of wealth and freedom means. According to Dean Kuchel, the Founder of the Israeli Digital Nomads Community, wealth revolves around friends and knowledge. While freedom is the digital nomad lifestyle. Having visited over 103 countries, Dean outlines his 8-year nomadding journey. As a previous consultant that recently quit his job, he currently lives on passive income. In this episode, he provides tips on financial planning from passive income, investing, and saving to the biggest challenges in his nomad lifestyle.

β€œWealth in terms of money and for me the most important part of it is to be able to say no to something like declining a job offer.”

How digital nomad Dean stared his digital nomad journey

Dean, the Founder of an Israeli Digital Nomads Community, has been nomadding for eight years. Previously, he was a consultant focused on customer success for various tech companies – e-commerce, security, etc. Though, he built enough savings to sustain him and allow him to shift to the digital nomad lifestyle – which is the fate he desired. Dean did not choose to become a digital nomad. Initially, he moved to San Francisco for a career, worked remotely for a few months, and met people at coffee shops who inspired him to discover the digital nomad lifestyle. Eventually, he found himself traveling around 103 countries while working remotely.

In this article we cover:

  • Achieving financial freedom through passive income, investing and saving
  • What is wealth and freedom
  • Tips and recourses to achieve financial freedom
  • Biggest challenges of digital nomad lifestyle

Achieving financial freedom through passive income, investing and savings

This episode covers some great tips about how to achieve financial freedom. Passive income is a popular topic also within the digital nomad community. Dean is not the only podcast guest who talks about this. Anastasia and Tomar also created passive income streams before starting their digital nomad journey. You can find this episode and the show notes here.

We would love for you to listen to the entire conversation with Dean. Here we list some of his tips about creating passive income and what he did to achieve financial freedom:

  • Passive income streams worth $5k per month. It does fluctuate, and his goal is to bring it up to $30k a month.
  • Build a 6-9 months emergency fund so you can say no
  • Equity and dividends by investing in real estate and boutique hotel groups
  • Investing in the foreign stock exchange

He lives a comfortable life, but he doesn’t purchase things to show off. His number #01 piece of advice to everyone is to invest every dollar and start today. Even if you haven’t started yet, it’s never too late.

The meaning of wealth and freedom

Every person has their meaning of wealth and freedom. To a majority of people, wealth measures how financially comfortable you are.

For him, wealth goes beyond that. It is about being able to say no and being comfortable with declining a job offer. Dean fears working in a job he does not genuinely like. Instead, his driving force is being confident to reject that offer and focus on where his passions lie.

Dean believes freedom stems from a digital nomad lifestyle. He may prefer visiting places he’s familiar with and meeting past friends, but Dean states exploring every beautiful corner of the world is what he truly enjoys.

featured image Digital Nomads Daily Podcast episode How To Achieve Financial Freedom With Digital Nomad Dean

Tips and recourses to achieve financial freedom

Dean claims that his pursuit of nomadic experiences is what helped him garner his own financial independence. In other words, by going to various places and learning from all walks of life, he recognized how to save money wisely while traveling and working remotely.

He offers personal tips and recourses for digital nomads to achieve this financial freedom. First, he suggests reading several relevant books a week, connecting with digital nomad communities, and listening to podcasts from men who drop their financial independence tips – e.g., how to invest like a boss. Next, he recommends how to manage your passive income as well as invest and save:

Create passive incomes

  • Keep in mind that this can always fluctuate – e.g., Dean’s is at $5k/month, but his goal is to reach $30k per month.

Investing for digital nomads

  • Set a 6-9 months emergency fund.
  • Invest every dollar – whether that’d be the foreign exchange or elsewhere. Aim for investments that generate 10%-15%. Rely on doing real estate in syndicates and boutique investment groups as the equity and dividends are in the companies.

Digital Nomads and saving

  • Start saving as young as possible!
  • Don’t bother flaunting or showing off your wealth through luxurious goods – nice cars, shoes, watches, clothes, etc.
  • You’re mistaken if you think it’s too late to begin saving your money. The best time to pursue a dream is now.

Overall, Dean encourages digital nomads to constantly scout for investment opportunities as they can easily lead you to that desired financial freedom. With saving, it is never too late to start. Make sure also to enjoy the process, travel the world, and have fun.

The biggest challenge in his nomad lifestyle

On the surface, a nomadic lifestyle may appear luxurious and facile. However, that is not the case. Like every other lifestyle, it comes with its challenges. Dean shares some of his difficulties in the digital nomad lifestyle. Even when achieving financial freedom goals, he emphasizes how some other aspects will always suffer.

  • The depth of connections
  • The pain of leaving friends and family
  • Building strong relationships

Nevertheless, even the darkest obstacles lead to fortune. For instance, Dean mentions how saying yes to every socializing opportunity is what brings light to those difficulties. The beauty of a nomadic lifestyle blesses you with longtime and meaningful friendships that you would never anticipate. Meeting someone new is like his first step remedy to overcoming some of these challenges, as you never know what can blossom from those interactions.

Quick takeaways for nomads that want to achieve financial freedom

Achieving financial freedom

Take every chance you have to invest every dollar. But obviously, be conscious of the trends, understand how it works. Prepare a 6-9 month emergency fund and start saving from a very young age. Avoid showing off and flaunting your wealth and Rely on others for help and inspiration – digital nomad communities, books, and podcasts.

Everyone has different definitions of wealth and freedom.

Don’t shy away or be afraid to say no to a job offer – especially when it is not truly something you want.
Nevertheless, say YES to every opportunity you have where you can meet new people. Some days, it can lead to amazing friendships!

Don’t underestimate the challenges of the digital nomad lifestyle.

It comes with a lot of emotional pain as you foster great new connections, then you can leave abruptly. You also must leave your family and friends as you’re constantly on the go.

Leaving the corporate world behind and reinventing yourself with Tarek

Leaving the corporate world behind and reinventing yourself with Tarek

Digital Nomads Daily Cover Photo new episode with ceo and founder tarek nomands giving back leaving the corporate world behind

08: Leaving the corporate world behind and reinventing yourself with Tarek

Our guest Tarek is a social entrepreneur who has been nomadding for more than 9 years. He learned that his mission was to give back to the local communities. His businesses, Nomads Giving Back and Nomads Skillshare, are his pride and joy and the start of something big. In this episode, he shares his love for meeting nomads. Tarek talks about his beautiful learnings and the cultural shocks. The last part of the episode covers the future of his business and his motivation to give back to local communities.

β€œI would ask everyone β€œHow do you give back to the communities?” β€œHow do you connect with locals?” Most of the time they would say β€œI don’t know, but if you figure it out let me know, because I want to do the same thing.”

How Nomads Giving Back started

After 12 years of living the corporate life and feeling unfulfilled, Tarek bought a one-way ticket to the unknown. He was certain about one thing though, he wanted to give back through social impact. During his travels, Tarek met a lot of travelers and got to know many digital nomads. He fell in love with their way of living and thinking. Especially those people who were going after their dreams, leaving the unconventional life behind, and facing their fears. When Tarek started meeting these remote workers, he used to ask them β€œHow do you connect with the locals?” β€œHow do you give back to the community?”. The majority of whom he asked had no clue how to support local communities but we’re definitely open to it. He often got answers like β€œI don’t know, but if you figure it out please let me know”. In this moment he saw the gap and a new opportunity entered his path. His new journey started and he called it Nomads Giving Back. Just like the name reveals, he wanted to help digital nomads and travelers to give back to local communities.

Traveling somewhere? Here are 3 ways you can give back:

Aside from donating money, there are many ways to give back to local communities. Tarek identified 3 ways of giving back and can help you do this. There are three categories: Advocacy Tarek describes this as using your voice for social good. And as the nomad community is getting bigger every year, this will have a lot of impacts. You are not only inspiring other nomads but also the people who are in your home country and follow your travels. Volunteering The Nomads Giving Back team has developed a volunteer matching program. If you are interested in giving back in some way through your skills, Tarek team can help you. They partner you with one of their social causes that they are close to, taking into account your skills and knowledge. Fundraising or donations Fundraising and donations are always a great way to give back to local communities. Tarek and his team have many ideas and are connected to local NGOs to help you. If you would like to know more about this go to the website of Nomads Giving Back.

Learning from cultural differences

One of the craziest things that Tarek did was drive across India for 4000 km in a rickshaw. For our readers who don’t know what that is, it’s a mix of a tuk-tuk and a golf cart that is used as a method of transportation in many Asian countries. It was a wild ride because the rickshaw broke down around 20 times. At first, you might think that this is terrible but Tarek found himself in a magical moment. Funny enough, Tarek always received help within 2 minutes. One time the engine broke so badly that there was no option other than to take it to the mechanic. This was 2 km away and a local offered to push the rickshaw to the mechanic shop. After 45 minutes of pushing in the hot sun, Tarek insisted on giving back some money for anything the guy would need. The man refused to get paid, instead all he wanted was to be his Facebook friend.

Allow yourself to reinvent yourself

When you travel or explore new cultures, you learn a lot. Everyone who joined the digital Nomads Daily Podcast so far experienced one or more life-changing moments. One of the things Tarek started to notice was the difference between the people who were back home and his new community. This might sound harsh but sometimes the people who love us and the people who we grow up with, are actually holding us back from growing. Of course, this is not intentional but does happen. Simply because while you keep reinventing yourself, back home people keep holding on to your old identity because that’s comfortable for them and especially for yourself! Don’t let yourself hold back by what other people expect from you and allow yourself to reinvent yourself.

Learn and give back to local communities

Nomadsskillshare.com is the a new social enterprise Tarek and his team are currently working on. Overcoming Fears and Building Community with Digital Nomad Magali

Overcoming Fears and Building Community with Digital Nomad Magali

Podcast cover of Overcoming Fears and Building Community with Digital Nomad Magali by digital nomads daily (1)

07: Overcoming Fears and Building Community with Digital Nomad Magali

Magali Bejar is a technical remote product manager. While taking the leap into the digital nomad lifestyle three years ago, she has encountered many challenges as a female solo traveler. In this episode, she talks about how she handles her fears, the importance of saying yes, and how she gets out of her comfort zone.

β€œJust show up and say β€œHey, how are you? I’m from Argentina.” That first step usually takes a lot of energy….”

Biggest challenges as a solo-female digital nomad

Magali knew that her digital nomad journey would also have a lot of challenges. In this episode, she shares how hard it was at the start. One challenge was not having anyone around that could give her tips or share personal experiences she could learn from. Going through all the challenges on her own also became expensive. The challenges that she encountered were:

  • Taking the first step to meet people: one of the things that still make Magali so uncomfortable every time she travels is not knowing anyone. Her solution, even though it can take a lot of energy and motivation, is to convince herself of going to events, meet-ups to get to know new people.
  • The time-zone difference: she works with remote teams and has a remote worker and traveler she always has to be aware of the time differences.
  • Learning and adapting: As a solo traveler she keeps working on herself and focusing on routines that help her to feel safe and help her grow.

Practical tips to take the first step for making new friends

It’s never easy to take the first step but you kinda have to if you want to make new nomad friends. Getting out of your comfort zone and putting yourself out there is complicated for almost every single digital nomad. For Magali, this is one of the most difficult situations while traveling. Getting somewhere new and not knowing anyone, not having plans, or even not knowing where to go to meet them. Therefore, as a person who struggles with this more often than not, she has some tips for all:

  • Say yes! Yes to any event you find online, to any co-working space, any meet-up you find out about.
  • Just remember that we are in the same boat. We are all alone and everyone wants to make new friends.
  • Co-working spaces that have a large community are a great way to meet new people. You can get a short-term pass and join all events to meet new people.
  • When traveling somewhere new, go on Goole and type β€œcity that you are at + digital nomads”. You will get some Facebook groups, blogs and best meet-up places.

Meeting new people when you are on a tight budget

Many nomads who are just starting have a travel budget. Our host Nienke Nina had a tight budget but that didn’t stop her from building community. So, she decided that the best way to meet people fast was to invest in a one-month subscription to Dojo Coworking in Bali. That month she showed up to every event, talk, party, dinner, meet-up and created nomad friendships for life.

Traveling as a solo female digital nomad

As a woman born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Magali is very aware of what is happening around her. She developed a sense of danger. Because of this she always prioritizes her health, her passport her money, and keeping her cards safe. As sad is might sound, it did give her the advantage to take the necessary actions whenever she travels. Luckily Magali has had no infortunes as a solo female traveler!

How to handle fear

Starting this journey with a lot of fears and doubts it’s completely normal. Many people experience so much fear before they even start and end up not giving the digital nomad lifestyle a try. Magali describes this fear as a big gray cloud in her mind. The cloud blocks you from understanding what is going on and you will hold on to that fear. To step away from this fear she uses a method where she’ll write down everything that she worries about. She points out the details and by doing this she identifies her fears and can separate fear from reality. With this information, she can take precautions and don’t let fear get in her way.

Routine that Magali follows to help this lifestyle

Many digital nomads follow daily routines. This could be a morning routine and an evening one before bed. Creating a routine keeps you sane and helps you adapt to a new location. Key elements in Magalies routine are:

  • Sleeping +8 hrs
  • Drinking 3L of water every day
  • Swimming or any type of exercise
  • Keeping a journal and writing everything that she is grateful for. It helps her realize everything that she has and how hard she has worked for it.

If you want to know more about morning routines, we interviewed Michael Saukulak aboutΒ the power of morning routines.

How to make working online easier and more pleasurable

Working remotely has numerous perks, but it also takes a lot of process and energy to make it successful. Not only for yourself but for the people you work with. The last thing you want is to be a burden to someone else.

Magali is part of a remote team with people from different countries and cultures. As enriching as that can be, there are always some challenges. She shared some tips to help her work online and combat these challenges.

  • Overcommunicate: always strive for clarity around tasks and projects.
  • Make sure that everything is available for everyone all the resources, and information, and that it’s online available.
