Going through a digital nomad breakup

Traveling the world and working from anywhere sounds like a dream come true right? It is but it’s not always that easy and expect to get slapped in the face by challenges. Nienke Nina is has been a digital nomad for almost 5 years and knows by heart the ups and downs this lifestyle has. You can feel lonely or feel shitty at work. Sometimes these challenges are very little and easy to navigate but recently Nienke Nina experienced something bigger – a breakup.

Heartbreaks are tough and digital nomads experience them too. We talked with digital nomad Daisy about this on the podcast a few months after her breakup. We love how honest our digital nomad guests are because when those moments happen, you need to know that you are not alone.

Why digital nomads should always prioritize community

Even though breakups are hard and can take months before you sort of feel yourself again, there are a few challenges digital nomad Nienke Nina had. She shared some tips on how she is dealing with her breakup and the power word is ‘’community’’.

She shares that the digital nomad lifestyle in general, with or without breakup, isn’t as fruitful if it wasn’t for the community. She learned that it was extremely important to be surrounded by people with similar mindsets, and goals and most importantly; understand her without explaining herself.

Tips on how digital nomads can go through a breakup

We highly recommend listening to this episode to get the full story. It’s not a said episode at all but Nienke Nina speaks her truth. Here are a few tips from her:

Create your healing environment

Not every space is good to heal from a breakup. Ask yourself where you want to go through this experience and what your mind, body, heart and soul need. That might be a busy digital nomad hub, somewhere near the ocean or in your home country.

Reach out to your online community

In-person hugs are the best but as digital nomads, you don’t always have your people around you. So make sure you also have a strong online community and when you feel sad or unsure about something reach out to them too.

Talk about your thoughts and feelings

Talking about your feelings is human and when you do this with the right people it will be very nurturing for your healing process. Be mindful and intentional with whom you ask for advice or feedback.

Focus on positive things you have in control

The worst part of breakups is too loose control of everything and the feeling that everything is falling apart. Take a look into your life and focus on a few things that are going where and create more of that. Perhaps you are killing it at work or you feel good about your daily routine.

Be kind and invest in yourself

This could actually be an ongoing thing but especially when your heart is broken be extra kind to yourself. Whatever the reason for this separation – you got yourself only when you show kindness and love to yourself. So invest in something that is a daily reminder of the beautiful person you are.

Extra tip: Nienke Nina loves perfume but her ex-boyfriend was allergic so she didn’t wear it for 3 years. After the breakup, she bought a new perfume that she wears every day to remind herself of the strong and beautiful human she is. It might sound like BS but it works!

“Dance makes us present and that is the state of mind we need to enjoy a place.”

Digital Nomads Daily Podcast episode 99 How Dance Can Improve Your Daily Self-Confidence with Digital Nomad My (1)

Meet digital nomad and founder of Confidance My

In this fun podcast episode, we are joined by a multi-talented guest, My (pronounced “me” in Vietnamese). My has been a passionate dancer and entrepreneur for over three years and she brings a wealth of experience to the conversation. My runs her own company that offers a range of services, including dance retreats, classes, and workshops for companies.

Additionally, she leverages her expertise in digital marketing as a freelancer. Through her unique blend of skills and pursuits, My shares valuable insights into the world of dance and entrepreneurship, offering listeners a glimpse into her digital nomad journey.

How digital nomad My started her dancing life?

As a child, My couldn’t stop dancing. Like many of her friends, she was enrolled in a dance school to explore the world of traditional Vietnamese dance. Her love for dancing only grew stronger, becoming a constant source of joy and a remedy for both good and bad days. Despite initially pursuing a different path in economic school, My never stopped attending dance classes. It was five years ago that she had an epiphany, realizing how dance could help not only herself but also others overcome life’s challenges. From that moment on, she embraced the transformative power of dance, inspiring others to find solace and triumph through movement.

My’s unwavering passion for dance ignited during her childhood and led her to a dance school where traditional Vietnamese dance took hold of her heart. Dancing became a perpetual source of happiness, providing respite during both difficult and celebratory moments. Despite choosing a different academic path, dance remained an essential part of My’s life. It was a life-altering realization five years ago that unveiled the true power of dance, empowering her to overcome obstacles and inspire others to do the same. Through movement, My discovered the strength to conquer challenges and spread the magic of dance to those in need.

Top Tips for Incorporating Dance into the Daily Life of Digital Nomads

Start the day with a dance

Begin your mornings with a few minutes of dancing to a song that makes you happy or brings a sense of calm. It helps activate your muscles, body, and brain, setting a positive tone for the day.

Take quick dance breaks

Incorporate short dance breaks throughout the day, such as before or after lunch, to boost energy levels and keep yourself motivated. Play energetic music and dance along to re-energize and refocus.

Join dance classes or workshops

Seek out social dance classes or workshops to connect with people and have fun, providing a break from work-related activities. Engaging in dance with others can help you unwind and shift your focus away from work.

Use dance as a transition

Use dance as a transition between work and personal life. When you find it challenging to disconnect from work, dance can help you relax, release stress, and shift your mindset away from business-related thoughts.

Embrace imperfection and build confidence

Dancing teaches acceptance of oneself and the imperfections of our bodies. Through consistent practice and attending dance classes, you can witness personal growth and increased confidence in your dancing abilities. Change the way you speak to yourself and focus on the joy of dancing rather than comparing yourself to professional dancers.

Dance to be present

Dancing requires being present in the moment, allowing you to shift your attention away from work and distractions. It helps cultivate mindfulness and trains your mind to focus on the present, promoting mental well-being.

Activate your inner dancer

Believe that everyone has an inner dancer within them, waiting to be activated. Embrace your body and let go of self-judgment, allowing yourself to enjoy the freedom and expression that dance brings.

Remember, dance can be incorporated into daily life in various ways, and its benefits extend beyond physical movement. It can boost confidence, promote mindfulness, and provide a joyful outlet for self-expression, enhancing the overall well-being of digital nomads.

‘‘There is no barrier to what I can and cannot do.’’

Featured image digital nomads daily podcast episode 98 From Office Job To Full-Time Travel Content Creator with digital nomad monika

From investment banking to full-time digital nomad content creator

Digital nomad Monika was living the travel lifestyle for 2 years already without even realizing there was a word for what she was doing – digital nomad. Since she figured that out she realized that there is a global community of people doing similar things like her and she feels like she found her tribe. The digital nomad lifestyle didn’t happen overnight though for Monika, it has been a slow transition like many other people chat about in the podcast. In this episode, she shares how she did it and you can tune in or continue reading if you want to get a glance at the quick and actionable steps to start your digital nomad lifestyle journey.

How she left her save office job and started her travel lifestyle

Growing up in India, Monika felt a lot of social pressure and followed what was expected from her and landed a career in investment banking. Even though she did this for 5 years already, she never really enjoyed it but she also didn’t know what else she could do. So her very first step was a long period of self-reflection figuring out what she loves doing and how she can incorporate that into her daily life. One of her passions is traveling and thi is the second step of her digital nomad lifestyle journey. During a work trip she decided to start capturing her travels and as she began to travel more, she kept creating content on her blog. Sharing stories online on her travel blog Monika received messages and this is how she found out that she and her blog can be valuable for other aspiring travelers. Then, the pandemic hit and forced her to work remotely, she took this opportunity to work from anywhere and worked from 30+ cities across India in 6 months. While she was working online Monika also discovered new things and even learned how to become a paragliding pilot! As you can imagine – going back to the office wasn’t an option anymore. Meanwhile, her blog kept growing and once it started to pick up and projects came her way, Monika entered a new step in her journey. After working hard for 5 years, saving money and experienced working from anywhere, she finally made the bold decision to pursue her passions. Her drive to give it a fair shot was when she realized that if she could go to an office for 5 years not liking her job or being in the office, she can try this new lifestyle for 1-2 years and then see what happens. The big lesson is that this didn’t happen overnight and it took her over 5 years, a pandemic and experimenting to design and build her new dream lifestyle.

How digital nomad Monika makes as a travel content creator

Monika describes herself as an adventure travel content creator and recently talks more about the digital nomad lifestyle to inspire others. We asked her how she makes money online and here is a quick overview of her online income streams:

Content creation for her personal brand: blog, Instagram and YouTube
Content creation for clients: consulting or freelance project work

One of the most exciting things about this lifestyle for Monika is that she discovered how to keep adding opportunities to build out her revenue streams. Since she loved creating all kinds of digital content she realized:

‘‘There is no barrier to what I can and cannot do.’’

Tips on how to start living your dream life

Starting a side hustle or new lifestyle isn’t an overnight task and that is what we not only hear from digital nomad Monika but all our other guests have shared. It takes time, willingness, discipline and a growth mindset to make it work. Monika shared the key steps for her life:

👉 Step 1: Figure out what else you want to do by using self-reflection exercises
👉 Step 2: Experiment and start a side hustle so you make money with something you love along your job
👉 Step 3: Once you found something that seems to work focus on growing it so you can enter the phase where you can quit one (your main) job
👉 Step 4: Accept that this takes time and keep track of your feelings, thoughts and learnings during your projects.
👉 Step 5: Have fun! There is no better way to make money than something you really like doing!

What are the key steps in starting a side hustle and making it into a consistent income?

In the beginning, Monika was very confused because she had never done it before. So her way to go about it was first just to go for it and secondly focus on learning all the skills along the way, including how to sell her services and find clients and projects. Monika shares a few tips for other aspiring freedom seekers:

💙 Start off in a fun way and focus on the things you love doing
💙 Start small and keep an open mind focused on learning new skills
💙 Find a mentor or expert that can guide you and connect with like-minded people
💙 Don’t worry about not knowing everything yet because you will figure it out
💙 Provide good quality service so your clients keep coming back and resign the contract
💙 Make smarter mistakes by not repeating your past mistakes

Where to find fully remote jobs for digital nomads

With so many fake remote jobs out there it’s really time-consuming and frustrating to know what jobs are actually fully remote and which you should apply for. Even more annoying, companies tend to attract talent by saying it’s fully remote but often you are still required to go into the office so we asked Michelle what the different types of remote jobs are.

Hybrid remote

This means being forced to go into an office a week once a month. These jobs aren’t suitable for traveling digital nomads but are often posted as remote jobs.

Fully remote / work from home

You might think that this is the right job but when you read fully remote jobs you might not have to go back to the office but often companies specify the location. While this is remote work, this isn’t the right fit for digital nomads because you are not allowed to work outside the required location. This could be a city, state, country or continent.

100% Work From Anywhere (WFA)

These are the golden nuggets for digital nomads because work from anywhere doesn’t specify where you need to conduct your work – and anywhere means ANYWHERE! So when you are a digital nomad remote job seeker this is the type of job you want to focus on.

Tips to find Work From Anywhere jobs for digital nomads

Now that you know which jobs you can focus on the next step is to actually find those jobs. When you follow Michelle on LinkedIn, you will see that she occasionally calls companies out if they posted ‘’fake’’ remote job posts. So instead of scrolling through LinkedIn and constantly getting disappointed Michelle has a view of top tips to find work from anywhere remote jobs

😎 List down companies that work from anywhere and that you are interested in joining. If they don’t have any job openings you can send out an open application that you are interested in the company and would love to know when something opens up

😎 Immerse yourself in the remote world. The LinkedIn algorithm is clever and you need to make that algorithm in your favor. You also want to do this because by surrounding yourself with the right people who have similar beliefs, values and interests it’s more likely that you find the job and have more fun in the process.

You’re better off putting your energy and efforts into companies who get it already so you don’t have to convince them.

😎 Set up job alerts on job boards that offer work from anywhere job opportunities or in your industry that have a filter for remote. Rather than look at the traditional job boards.

😎 Find the people who are interviewing you and find some common ground. This could be as little as you both have cats or grew up in the same location. Be discrete though because you want this person to think you stalked them but it could bring the difference between you are someone going to the next interview round.

How long does it take to find a remote job

Michelle shares that this very much depends on the journey of each individual. She helps people find jobs faster and eases up the process but she simply cannot promise a specific time. Some of her students found a job within 2-3 weeks and others took 6 months because they for example applied for fewer jobs or the market was slow.
