Leaving corporate work life and heading off into the world to figure out life was the first step of Marinas’ digital nomad journey. Initially, she just went on a backpacking trip but she fell in love with the travel lifestyle and found a way to continue to travel. Marina is currently making a living through consulting services. However, her entrepreneurial mind doesn’t sit still. Marina describes the ultimate freedom to build a business that doesn’t depend on her working hours. It’s a conversation we had with digital nomad Anne in episode #22, who grew her freelance career into a successful agency. Her days look very different now and she currently works only a couple of hours a day. Anne shares meaningful lessons in this episode so if you want to learn more about online entrepreneurship and freelancing click here to listen. One of Marina’s favorite things about the digital nomad lifestyle and traveling is meeting new people. So finding community is a big focus whenever she goes to a new location. While some nomads are more introverted, like digital nomad marcel, Marina enjoys going out and connecting with others.

She shares that it’s important to be surrounded by people that can teach her new things, support her, and have a community that pushes her forward. So how does she find like-minded people? Here are the top 5 tips Marina shared in this episode. 🌟 Slow down the travel pace and stay 1-3 months in one location so you have time to get to know the digital nomads and the locals. 🌟 Choose a shared accommodation so you always have people around you. A co-living with private rooms or a homestay are great places to live comfortably and mingle. 🌟 Put yourself out there and introduce yourself in online groups and make sure people know you (or are about to) arrived in town. Of course, Marina always keeps in mind people could reject her or get ignored but she doesn’t focus on that. Marina’s goal is to meet people so that’s her focus. 🌟 Find a location that meets your needs and returns seasonally so you already know some people when you return. 🌟Follow the local businesses on social media and research the things to do that matter to you beforehand. Marina always searches for all the yoga or pilates places around town and this is where she usually meets like-minded people.
Featured image Digital Nomads Daily Podcast The 5 Best Ways To Find Friends For Digital Nomads With Marina (1)
Even though Marina is an extrovert and has no problems meeting new people, she does find it hard to make deeper connections. Especially on the days she doesn’t feel like her positive self, it’s nice to have closer friends around you. Coming back to places is a good way to tackle this. Marina also travels with her partner, although making meaningful connections is always a priority in her digital nomad lifestyle. Aside from friends, Marina also loves to support local communities. Her way of doing this is by following them on social media and consuming from local businesses. So instead of going to Starbucks, she will have her coffee in a local cafe. In this way, she enriches her lifestyle even more and by sharing this, she hopes to inspire other digital nomads to do the same. Connecting with locals also has given her unique experiences so this is an extra reason to step out of your comfort zone and go local!

Meet digital nomad and sales expert Desmond

Digital nomad Desmond is an expert in sales and started his traveling journey. Building his career wasn’t easy and it took him years of studying and practicing and even today, he considers himself a student. Desmond studied engineering but shifted to a career in sales. He got my doors slammed in his face but worked his way up and today he is successful in building and leading sales teams.

So how did he get there? Desmond shares that at the beginning of his career, he lacked a lot of skills. He got fired from his first sales job but it didn’t stop him from becoming really good at it. Instead, he started studying sales and figured out that sales wasn’t about him at all. He also realized that becoming better at sales is about putting yourself out there and constantly chatting with people so you can practice.

All digital nomads are sales people

Many digital nomads are in some way entrepreneurs and are interested in creating their unique freedom lifestyle. Some people focus on building their businesses, while others are excited about creating passive income streams. So believe it or not, knowing how to sell is a pretty effective skill to master for digital nomads. Sales is not only about selling something like your services or products but also comes in handy during a job interview or making connections. So the most important thing you need to know is that the skill of selling comes with experience. He believes that with 6 months of consistency and hard work, you can be good in that thing you put your mind to.

5 effective ways how you can improve your sales skills

What we love about the podcast is that our guests don’t shy away from giving practical tips that worked for them. Desmond shares 5 ways how you can improve your sales skills today so you can keep working on building freedom.

Sales tip #01 Put yourself out there

You need to be willing to practice and master your skills. So stepping into the world and approaching people is the first step. You can take courses, read books and consume content but you need to apply it to improve.

Sales tip #02 Become obsessed with trying to understand the other person.

The more curious you are about that person, the better experience that person will have with you. Sales is a lot about relationship building and during your first discovery call, you only want to focus on them and their problem.

Sales tip #03 Master how to listen because sales isn’t about you

According to Desmond, most people struggle with how to listen, but this is one of the key success ingredients in sales. So become a more empathetic listener and ensure you always listen with the intention of repeating exactly what you heard.

Sales tip #04 Get permission to send an offer

This sounds funny, but if your prospect (a potential customer) is giving your permission to send the offer, it usually means they are open to receiving it. In that case, your prospect is more likely to say yes. A simple way of doing this is asking on a discovery call, “Is there anything else you think I should know?” so your prospect can think of the next steps and receiving an offer is part of that step.

Sales tip #05 Set boundaries to make your offer timely

After you send an offer, you wait but for how long? Desmond recommends that any offer should have some type of logistical boundaries. This could be 7 or 10 day business days your offer doesn’t just sit there. The easiest way to do this is to specify it on the proposal until it’s valid.

Sales tip #06 All parties need to sign an agreement.

When offering a service, certain things are always included but you also want to specify what isn’t excluded. A simple example is a website design. You want to agree on small things like the number of revisions, the payments and if you provide any aftercare services or not. So make sure your prospect knows what the work entails and both sign the agreement before starting the work.

Sales tip #07 Nurture your relationship and stay in touch

Desmond is a fan of following up via email and he does this after the call. During the sales process, you must keep making an authentic human connection to stay in touch with your prospect. Even if they don’t buy right now they might be ready later if you want to continue to build that relationship.

The best books to read to master your sales skills

The book The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino is great for beginners and teaches you the basics of sales. It’s a short book and a good read for digital nomad entrepreneurs and freelancers. Desmond shares that the next stage is to learn about things that affect sales which are more psychological things. Thirdly he joined a Natural language processing (NLP) training, a psychological approach involving analyzing thoughts, language, and behavior patterns and applying them to reach a personal goal. Lastly, Desmon is excited about studying people, biographies, and watching poker tournaments. Of course, this is a profound dive but getting familiar with sales and making this a priority is an essential first step for all digital nomads.

The sales challenge with Desmond

Desmond love sharing what he knows and he designed a 21-day dales challenge called “no dollar left behind”. He gives 21 days of content, about 20-30 min videos, and gives training on specific topics such as making more money online, getting more clients, and arranging contracts. It’s free and go to

“Information is power and it’s better to know and to plan ahead, rather than just wait and be caught off guard with very little options in front of you.”

Article image of The Digital Nomads Daily Podcast episod 44 Can Digital Nomad Women Freeze Their Eggs Abroad with Daniela (1)

Not all digital nomads are marketings folks or coaches

Daniele has been nomadding for almost five years, although she was already living abroad working as an expat. Like many other digital nomads she prefers slowmadding and likes to stay in one place for several months. When people think about working online often, we see jobs like social media managers and VAs but Daniela’s job is very different. She is an online patient educator and helps people ask questions when seeking medical advice about fertility preservation. This is her specialty created two online programs for people who’re considering fertility preservation abroad. It’s also known as the process of saving or protecting eggs, sperm, or reproductive tissue so that a person can have biological children later in the future. She used to work in a clinic and saw the lack of information provided and often patients struggled with asking the right questions. Since it’s such a delicate topic, Daniela understood the need for better education and support.

Why digital nomads want to learn about egg freezing now (not just for the ladies)

You might wonder why did we cover this on the podcast? As it turns out, many digital nomads are starting their lifestyle in their thirties, and not everyone is ready to have children. However, many digital nomad women and couples are in a challenging situation due to the biological clock that keeps ticking. As you can imagine, this is highly uncomfortable. Egg freezing is a way to save your healthy eggs for later but the process isn’t as simple. Still, in many countries, people don’t speak about fertility as it’s considered taboo. Unfortunately, sometimes women and couples learn very late of their options. Daniela’s mission is to break this taboo and empower people to speak about it.
Image of The Digital Nomads Daily Podcast episod 44 Can Digital Nomad Women Freeze Their Eggs Abroad with Daniela (1)

Have female digital nomads have safe options for egg freezing abroad?

Luckily technology around the world enables women to freeze their eggs. In fact, Daniela shares that as travelers, we can access medical tourism and you can have eggs frozen in a country even if without living there. However, understanding the entire process’s benefits and limitations is essential, including knowing what questions to ask and how to prepare yourself. The first step in this process is to do tests, specifically the hormones. You want to find out your fertility with a gynecologist who can be done at any clinic and will not break the bank. They will show how many eggs are available and other information about fertility. It starts getting more difficult when to proceed and choose the right clinic. Daniela shares a couple of criteria she helps her clients think about, for example, the efficiency of the lab capabilities, in other words, can the lab keep your eggs safe? The country of treatment is important, too as you will need to come back for the treatment so choose a country where you feel comfortable and can come back. Financial investment is also part of the process. It could take several treatments, and you need to plan for this in advance. The US is the most expensive, whereas in Europe you can find goods with a more reasonable pricing. Mexico and Argentina are cheaper options with good clinics too.

When is the right time to start thinking about egg freezing?

Interestingly we learned in this episode that the best age from a biological perspective to do this proceeds is around the 20s. Women seem to be most fertile at that moment, although many women consider this process later in their thirties. However, since the procedures are expensive, many young women don’t consider that. That is not to say you are too late and Daniela shares that the best time to do it is when it matters to you. That could be right now, or at least start understanding if this matches your desires and future plans.
‘‘Egg freezing act like a safety net. It’s not a guarantee but it does give you a bit of peace of mind basically because you have genetically healthy eggs from a younger version of you.’’
Daniela isn’t affiliated with any clinique and simply wants to support those considering this during the process by empowering her clients with information. As she shares on the podcast, in her words:
‘‘Information is power and it’s better to know and to plan ahead rather than just wait and be caught off guard with very little options in front of you.’’
In her experience, people lose a lot of time and money on researching the best options. Her role is basically to help you understand the procedure, be equipped with the right questions, and be prepared for your first appointment at the clinic so you make the most out of it. So if you have questions about this, we highly recommend getting in touch with her. We at Digital Nomads Daily certainly learned a lot in this special episode!

“What’s the point of education if you can’t earn money to sustain your life. So I wanted to understand what the situation was for refugees in this context.”

na'amal

Lorraine and her journey to remote work

Lorraine started working remotely way back in 2011 and at the time, she didn’t realize it because she was just doing her thing. Since her co-worker was based in Venezuela, they collaborated virtually via video calls and using shared documents in dropbox.

She continued her remote journey and works in many different things nowadays. She is a Digital Solutions Specialist for Finn Church Aid focused on refugees, doing research at Cambridge University and consulting.

During her research about refugees, she saw a massive gap and with that an opportunity to help refugees. Lorraine is a real go-getter and co-founded Na’amal, which is an initiative supporting refugees to work remotely.

In this episode, we learned that their a strong misconception about who refugees are. In fact, Lorraine shares that everyone could become a refugee. For example, due to the impact of climate change where people have been forced to flee their homes.

So it’s really hard to stereotype refugees. Interestingly, many refugees in today’s world have a degree and speak a second language like English. Digital media on platforms like YouTube and Netflix also contribute to the English language levels.

Na’mal prepared refugees for remote work by offering training and guidance in the remote job process. They also support their students with practicalities like documents and bank accounts so they can actually be hired once a job opportunity lands on their path.

The training is focused on soft skills in remote work environments and advanced digital skills like coding and UX/UI design. The training process typically takes around six months so they can enter the job market with confidence.

We are really excited about the future of Namal and its students. If you are a business owner or are looking for talent, we highly recommend getting in touch with Lorraine and her team. It’s initiatives like these that make a difference and at Digital Nomads Daily we love this way of giving back to other communities.

“This entire entrepreneurial journey started because of the community.”

aline digital nomad

Aline’s digital nomad journey: from VA to community leader to co-founder of the Nomad Soulmates App

Seven years ago, Aline’s life changed completely after reading an article about remote work. Aline quickly realized that she could travel and make money online. So she quit her training and pursued the digital nomad lifestyle. Her first step was looking into becoming a Virtual Assistant (VA) because she didn’t feel entirely ready to own her business yet. Becoming a VA was a smart move because she could see how others were running their business and succeeding.

Aline met many single travelers and she started her community Nomad Soulmates to help others make meaningful connections. Now six years later, the group is still thriving with over 17K members.

It’s a global community for single remote workers and kindness is at the heart of this group. Aline and her team are doing an incredible job at maintaining the kindness and positive vibes in the group even though it’s been growing rapidly.

Aline shares the different ways of making money and during the pandemic, she explored new paths. Her main income streams are freelance social media and marketing for small business owners. Learn more about this topic in episode 17 with digital nomad and social media expert Tiff where she shares the ins and outs of her business and how she started.
Aline also invests in cryptocurrencies and of course, Nomad Soulmates is also part of her income streams.

The biggest challenges she has encountered leading the Nomad Soulmates community

Through all the years in the community of Nomad Soulmates, Aline bumped into many challenges. She admits that one of the worst experiences was when she had to kick people out of the group due to inappropriate behavior among other group members. Eventually, Aline affirms that it is something you grow out of but always hurts the first time.

Aline shares that when she started the community, her main intention was that everyone needed to respect each other. She set some rules and boundaries expecting everyone to follow them. Of course, minor issues occur and this is where she had to learn to step up as a community leader while remaining kind and respectful.

If she could give a bit of advice to someone who wants to build a community would be to have a clear goal in mind. Set your intentions for what you want your community to look and feel like and act on that from the very beginning.

One tip she would give to digital nomads looking for love

Nienke Nina calls Aline the Mother Teresa of the nomad dating world and Aline has one tip she always shares with digital nomad when it comes to dating:

‘‘Try to take the pressure of dating and maybe even quit dating.’’

Dating by itself comes with a lot of pressure, which is why many people feel like it’s just too overwhelming. If you switch that mentality to just meeting someone and seeing where it goes, dating becomes much easier.

Aline also shares that dating for digital nomads has a negative impression because people tend to find it hard to meet people. While she acknowledges this struggle, she also saw many digital nomad dating success stories in her community. Some couples have met through the community who are still in touch, dating and some are even married. So don’t give up just yet, digital nomads and make sure to join the Nomad Soulmates Facebook Group.

Enjoying digital nomad dating stories? Digital nomad Anne shares how she met her boyfriend while traveling in episode #05 and digital nomad Jordan shares his dating experiences in episode #03 on The Digital Nomads Daily Podcast

For six years, digital nomad Aline has been building an incredible community. Her next idea was to build an app and she did this together with two other co-founders. Before they started building the app Aline and her other co-founders had no background in building apps. So they all had to learn from scratch and finally, all their hard work has paid off. After a lot of work and rough patches, the app is finally available in your app store.

“The most important skill I believe in working remotely effectively is mastering communication. People in general could improve their communication skills.”

Show notes Image of Digital Nomads Daily Podcast episode 41 The 5 Key Ingredients To Work Remotely Effectively with Anna Maria (1)
Remote work is the future of work and the impacts of the pandemic really fast-forwarded the trend of working from anywhere. Generally, digital nomads learn the skills along the way but many people working from an office need to adjust. The cool thing about this trend is that everyone working remotely has access to more knowledge, recourses and tips to master how we work remotely effectively. So also the digital nomad community benefits from this and the number of digital nomads really spiked in the past two years.
Remote work doesn’t always come naturally and many people, including digital nomads, struggle to make it work. It makes sense because you don’t learn remote office ethics at work and since it is so new, many organizations struggle too. Luckily there are many remote work experts like digital nomad Anna Maria.
She started her journey abroad as an expat based in Spain. She dipped her toes into the digital nomad lifestyle and did it part-time. In 2018 she went fully remote and today she is talking from Bucharest, an emerging digital nomad destination.
She helps individuals and organizations to work remotely more effectively. She focuses on transferable skills such as communication, critical thinking, and virtual teamwork. These skills you learn in one work experience and can take to your next work experience and are worth mentioning on your resume.
One of the most important skills for working remotely effectively is becoming really good at communicating with whom you work. Communicating new ideas, problems, and regular tasks or project updates needs a unique touch in remote work environments. Anna Maria shares a couple of examples in the podcast.

Remote communication is visual:

The communication needs to be more visual. Instead of writing long emails, you will use screenshots and screen recordings to share your thoughts with colleagues and clients.

Remote work requires self-motivation:

As a remote worker, you become in charge of taking the initiative and action to complete tasks and pursue your goals. Organizations can support this by providing workshops and training, but this is very challenging for the entrepreneurial folks.

The remote global workforce has to master time zones

As a global organization or business, mastering time zones is a top skill that comes to life in how you organize your work for yourself and others.

Organization and planning

Your online work hub needs to be accessible from anywhere and make it easy to collaborate with others. Using work management and collaboration tools will empower your work and eventually give you more freedom.

Remote needs more explicit boundaries:

When you work in the office, your schedule is more defined by when you show up at work. It doesn’t work like that in the remote work world so you need to set clear boundaries when you work and when you’re unavailable.

Featured image of Digital Nomads Daily Podcast episode 41 The 5 Key Ingredients To Work Remotely Effectively with Anna Maria (1)

How to set boundaries so you can work remotely effectively

Everyone needs boundaries and it is merely a way to maintain the health of any relationship. We set boundaries with our family members, friends, and partner but you also need to do this for co-workers and clients. It sounds pretty easy; however, this can be extremely uncomfortable. Anna Maria shares her tips about this in the episode, so make sure to listen. We listed some of the highlights for you below:

🌟 Try to always set boundaries at the beginning of your relationship. For example when you’re working with a new client or a new team member.
🌟 Be kind and delicate in your communication when you are re-establishing boundaries.
🌟 Avoid talking negatively or in a restrictive way. Show positively the way you want to work and be very clear.
🌟 There will be people that won’t respect this boundary at first. Make sure you stick to your boundaries and stay kind.
